Having never been able to see it in real life, only photographs, seeing the Aurora Borealis is on my bucket list. I’d really love to travel abroad to see it, I’ve heard Finland is one of the best places you can go to do so, in one of those awesome glass domes or while cuddling wolves.
They say one of the best times to see them over in Finland is March, around the Spring Equinox. Perfect time to go right?
Unfortunately, I can’t just hop on a plane and disappear for a few days… and where I live in Michigan, it’s super rare to see the Northern Lights, so… the kids and I brought them into our home.
We made “sensory” bottles, inspired by the colorful lights.
We tried two different ways.
Way one:
- Light Corn syrup
- Empty jar/bottle
- Water
- Glitter
- Food coloring
Fill half the jar with corn syrup, then fill the rest with water. Add a few drops of food coloring and glitter.
You can also add beads or little toys that will “float” around.
In all honesty, this way didnt work the way we wanted it to.. the colors just mixed and floated. I made it a lesson in density more than I did the Northern Lights. Homeschool for the win. 😉
Way two:
- Lots of Cotton balls
- Water
- Glitter
- Food coloring
- Glow in the dark paint
- Empty jar
Add cotton balls to jar, about half way. Add enough water to saturate the cotton, then a few drops of food coloring, glow paint, and glitter. Repeat until full.
The colors we used, were colors that you see in the Northern Lights: blues, greens, purples, and pinks.
It’s a fun craft for kids and adults alike.
Give it a try and show us your finished products. 🙂
