Valen plucked the glass box off the shelf and gently placed it on his desk. Inside, a set of handcrafted metal circles linked to form the body of his new beast. He closed his eyes and dreamed of the Fairacre residents buying his latest creations.

A commotion outside Valen’s shop brings him back to the present. The Captain has caught the leader of the sewer rats and is parading her in front of Fairacre residents. Her fate will be determined by the townsfolk’s demands.

Valen steps in to defend the leader.

A story of discovery, hope and courage, Valen and the Beasts is a journey of an outsider risking everything to stand up for the people he loves. Will Valen save the leader of the sewer rats? Will he show everyone his secret? Or will he buckle under the pressures of the old conventions?

Valen and the Beasts: A Juno and the Lady Novella is part of the Acre series by author G.J. Kemp. It is a nice, short story that gives us a brief glimpse of Valen’s life before we meet Young Juno.

I really enjoyed this novella. I am a big fan of short stories that offer more depth and insight into other characters from the main novel. In Valen and the Beasts we get to see how Valen lived before as an “outsider” in Fairacre.

We know from Juno and the Lady that Valen has a big heart, but here we get to see just how big it is and what lengths he is willing to go to help those he loves.

I would have loved to see more background on how he brings his beasts to life. We find out how he does it, but it never goes any further that his reciting an incantation. It’s a fantastic magical element and delving deeper, I feel, would only benefit the story.

I also would have liked more chemistry between Valen and Chloe. We are introduced to their relationship in Juno and the Lady , and it is plainly obvious that they love each other. However, we never really see them interact beyond surface level stuff and after what appeared to be just a few days… Valen loved her. I suppose this would benefit pre-teen boys that aren’t into romance just yet.

Valen and the Beasts has a compelling and exciting story line. The action is brought to the forefront. This is a fun and easy, one sitting read. I’m definitely ready for more from this author/series and cannot wait to see what happens next.

I gave Valen and the Beasts four stars.
