From the #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Darkest Minds comes a sweepingly ambitious, high-octane tale of power, destiny, love, and redemption.
Every seven years, the Agon begins. As punishment for a past rebellion, nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals. They are hunted by the descendants of ancient bloodlines, all eager to kill a god and seize their divine power and immortality.
Long ago, Lore Perseous fled that brutal world, turning her back on the hunt’s promises of eternal glory after her family was murdered by a rival line. For years she’s pushed away any thought of revenge against the man—now a god—responsible for their deaths.
Yet as the next hunt dawns over New York City, two participants seek her out: Castor, a childhood friend Lore believed to be dead, and Athena, one of the last of the original gods, now gravely wounded.
The goddess offers an alliance against their mutual enemy and a way to leave the Agon behind forever. But Lore’s decision to rejoin the hunt, binding her fate to Athena’s, will come at a deadly cost—and it may not be enough to stop the rise of a new god with the power to bring humanity to its knees.
I honestly was not expecting to enjoy Lore as much as I did.
Lore gives off The Hunger Games, meets Greek Myth… but without the total dystopian society.
While it starts off a bit slow the opening chapter includes an “underground” fight scene, and who doesn’t love books opening up with the action right away? The entire book was packed with action, it seemed we didn’t go one or two chapters without something going on.
As this is my first novel by Alexandra Bracken, I was unprepared for her ability to create tension. Every chapter was wrought with it. Epic fight scenes, emotional and tense dialogue, flashbacks that give more questions than answers until the very end!
While the book focuses on action and suspense, it also presents some real thought-provoking themes. The themes about destiny/fate and the ways that this concept can become twisted, as well as the problems with a patriarchy and its ability to be abused are intriguing to say the least. Lore is a talented fighter, but throughout the book its made clear that because she is a woman, her fighting skills are seen as secondary to a mans, as well as unnecessary.
There are definitely some things reader will find hard to swallow, the themes get darker. (Trigger warnings found below.)
Of course I would have liked to see more from Lore’s past and upbringing. While we get tidbits from the flashbacks, they weren’t very immersive. Which plays into my next point.. the romance. I love Castor, he’s such a good character, but their relationship wasn’t flushed out enough for me to get a pull picture.
I love Urban Fantasy aspect of Lore, combined with Greek myths, both common and obscure. Bracken takes what you think you know about the Greek deities and molds it.
Bracken kept some things vague; such as the rules for the Agon. This kept the story going, and I felt like it was better this way since a prevailing theme was twisting things to work in your favor.
While a major draw for most people will be the friends to lovers romance trope, a more prevalent, and in my opinion – better- trope was the Found Family. While Lore moves from house to house, she finally finds someone to let in, and by doing so finds more adoptive family that love her no matter what. Miles was one of my favorite characters. He was very go with the flow and I think he grounded Lore, he was exactly what she needed. I know that Lore is a standalone novel, but I would not say no to a book about Miles, or even Evander (Van) as he has a backstory about a missing hand I’d love to learn about.
