So, I have a ton of mixed feelings about Songs from the Heart by Y.S. Refitt.
The blurb drew me in instantly, I’m a sucker for a romantic sob story that will make me cry. And cry I did, a little bit.
I loved the premise of the story. It had a lot of potential. The romance between Rayna and Nick was cute. I found it similar to my own [with my husband], with subtle differences. I felt it was a little toxic at times, only because Rayna was childish and didn’t really slow down to take in consideration what people were telling her. I know she was only in her early twenties, but it still irked me a bit.
I wished there was a little bit more other relationship drama/angst, but there was so much other drama going on, it wasn’t really a sore point for me. Between Rayna’s heart disease, the band, and everything else, it would have been a bit much to add more relationship drama.
I found slight issue with the way the Organ Donor Registry caller spoke with Rayna on the phone. Who honestly is going to call you in a professional manner and point blank asks you if you’re planning on keeping your baby? That whole interaction was very cringe worthy. That being said, further in the book the author calls the babies incubators in the NICU “glass caskets.” I feel that is wrong on so many levels.
The author also lists three test being done at the hospital; a CAT Scan, an MRI, and a CT Scan. A CT and a CAT Scan are the same image testing. I may be nit picking a bit, but some of the hospital scenes just didn’t make sense to me, the way they were handled/written for the most part.
The hospital scenes with Nick were the saddest scenes in the book. That is where I had the most emotional reaction to the story, I could feel Rayna’s heartbreak and spiral into depression.
Songs from the Heart has a nice “found family” feel to it, with Rayna’s best friend Anna, the band, and the band mates families. They were a tight nit group that was always there for one another.
The ending, albeit a bit predictable, was cute. I liked the fact that Rayna come to the realization she couldn’t be mad at Dave and tried her best to rectify that.
My favorite part would have to be Rayna instantly becomes this amazing song writer and guitar player after her heart transplant. I thought that was a really neat touch to the story.
