War at the Ice Cream Store is the only book you’ve written a sequel for. Why this one?
War at the Ice Cream Store:Mustachio Pistachio vs. Bully Vanilla was my first—and bestselling—book. Reviewers wanted a sequel, but I thought I’d run out of ice cream puns. Turns out, I hadn’t.
Years ago, I wrote a song called Ice Cream Storm—a wild freezer food fight that planted the seed for book two. That swirl of chaos and flavor stuck with me.
One night, the sequel just poured out. I wrote through the night, hit send by morning, and my editor loved it. “Where do these ideas come from?” she asked. Honestly, I have no idea. But when they show up, I don’t dare stop them.
Biff Bam Booza’s tagline is “Read, Sing, and Get Your Giggles on.” Why do you think laughter is so powerful for learning?
When kids laugh, their brains light up—literally. Research shows humor helps with memory, attention, and even emotional regulation. But beyond the science, laughter lowers defenses. It invites kids in. It makes them feel safe and connected.
I think of laughter as a kind of glue—it bonds kids to stories, to characters, and to grown-ups reading beside them. When something’s funny, it sticks. And when it sticks, it teaches. That’s why I pack my books with puns, surprises, and playful rhythms. I want kids to giggle and grow.
Who is your favorite character from the series?
My favorite character has always been Non-Dairy Strawberry; she shows up again in the sequel. She’s got sass and cool shoes with licorice laces, and she delivers the best line in the original book—General Custard declares, “The ice cream store will not stand for intolerance.” Non-Dairy Strawberry quips, “Unless it’s lactose, of course.” The kids need it explained, but there’s learning in that.
Are there highs and lows in children’s book writing?
Definitely.
First, the highs: I get to create. After years in the corporate world, it feels like my right brain finally gets to shine—and I’m having an absolute blast doing it. There’s nothing better than turning a silly idea into a story that makes kids laugh out loud.
Now, the lows: Negative reviews can sting. Social media can feel like shouting into the void. And the logistics of publishing? Not exactly my favorite part. There are days I get discouraged.
But then—something magical will happen. Like the time an adorable little girl sent me a video declaring my book deserved “five stars—no, 50,000—no, infinity stars!” And just like that, my heart is full again, and I’m right back at the keyboard.
What’s next for you? Any more sweet adventures on the way?
Yes! I’ve just written a chapter book for kids ages 10–12 about a young songwriter who discovers her voice—and her confidence—through writing. It’s already been through editing, and now I have a 12-year-old beta reader giving me thoughtful feedback.
After writing mostly 600- to 900-word picture books, it felt amazing to get lost in the rhythm of chapter after chapter. I hope to release this little gem—along with original songs that tie into the story—later this year. It’s a brand-new adventure for me, and I’m loving every minute of it.
*Review*
Both books are full of charm and humor. I love a good pun, ice-cream puns are even better.
War at the Ice Cream Store: Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli
This book features characters at the ice cream store with Bully Vanilli who is the most popular flavor of ice cream. True to his name, he is indeed a big bully. His favorite target is poor Mustachio Pistachio, the least favorite flavor of ice cream.
Soon enough, Bully Vanilli realizes that without the others, he is just another plain ice-cream flavor and that he needs to be nice to others to be happy and that being a bully is not the way to be, that being a friend is the way to go.
My children laughed and giggled throughout the story. This is a very cute story and very clever way to teach children the consequences of bullying and that it is do wrong and hurtful.
However, I’m not so sure it is right teaching kids to bully someone who is bullying others. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
The illustrations are fabulous. They are vibrant and accentuate the moral of the story, bringing the story to life.
The interactive video book and website treats are cool added bonuses to this story.
I rated War at the Ice Cream Store: Mustachio Pistachio vs Bully Vanilli four stars.
War at the Ice Cream Store: Rocky Road vs The Sundae Storm
The sequel (but can be read on its own) to the award-winning War at the Ice Cream Store: Bully Vanilli vs Mustachio Pistachio, Rocky Road vs The Sundae Storm takes us back down to the Frozen Frogg Ice Cream Store, where a category five twister is out of control!
We are introduced to new characters, each full of so much personality.
This book gets more fun. It is funny and loveable.
I loved the cheeky pun of the sheriff’s office sending in Sugar Clones and Storm Scoopers. Although the best is Rocky Road coming to the rescue and saving the day.
I know children’s stories usually teach some sort of lesson, but to be honest I’m not sure what it was for Rocky Road vs the Sundae Storm. I was thinking maybe logic or common sense… two very important things everyone should learn.
The pictures were fun, entertaining, and appealing to look at. They are sure to hold the attention of readers of any age.
I rated War at the Ice Cream Store: Rocky Road vs The Sundae Storm five stars.
I hope to see a third book about the ice cream friend’s adventures soon!
