Sammy, a sergeant major fish, and Scarlett, a yellowtail snapper, are best friends who have found safety in a mangrove forest after being washed out of a tidal pool in a large wave. But they’ve decided to leave the mangroves and their friend Manny and journey across the sea-grass meadows to the barrier reef of the Florida Keys, the place that will be their home in adulthood.
Along the way, they make a new friend, a hawksbill sea turtle named Howie. Howie is a kind sea turtle who gives the young fish the guidance they need to get where they’re going and stay safe. The three quickly become fast friends and learn that they can trust one another through thick and thin. Howie protects the little fish from predators, and in return they help keep the turtle safe from the dangers of human litter such as plastic bags. Join Sammy, Scarlett, and new friend Howie as their epic journey continues through the magnificent Florida Keys.

Did your childhood play a significant role in your literary endeavors as an adult?
Yes, in my youth I regularly joined in with my family to watch wildlife and nature documentaries
on TV. Additionally, my mom always kept a birding guide on the sill by the windows where her
numerous back yard bird feeders were located. Trout fishing in the mountain streams was a common
activity in the verdant hills of Vermont as was hunting and hiking. From an early age I was groomed to
learn about and appreciate the sights and sounds of the natural world. I was and am, a willing “student
of nature” to this day.
We see from the back cover of your book that you served in the United States Navy. What
impact did that have on your writing and your life?
Great question. My tour with the Navy was transformative on many levels. All of them good.
After bootcamp I attended Navy firefighting school and was then assigned to a ship home ported in
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
I joined the Navy to see the world and this desire was certainly fulfilled. Via deployments across the
Pacific and Indian Oceans I had the opportunity to observe a wide variety of ecosystems and wildlife in
their natural often primal, settings.
What is your inspiration for writing children’s books about nature?
My inspiration for this genre comes from a deep and abiding love and appreciation of the
natural world and its inhabitants. Children are the future. In my opinion it is imperative that they and
future generations understand the fact that the ocean is not an endless, inexhaustible resource for
humans to squander and pillage. The next generations need to understand that if the seas die, humanity
will surely follow suit.
Why does a book about a “Coral Reef Adventure” start in a Mangrove Forest?
Because that’s exactly how it happens in nature. Mangrove forests are the “nurseries of the sea”. Many
species of fish spend the first years of their lives sheltered within the protective roots of the mangrove
trees. “Sammy and Scarlett’s Coral Reef Adventure” is the fact-based tale of two young fish making the
perilous journey from the safety of the mangrove forest out across the sea grass meadows to the coral
reefs of Florida that will be their adult homes.
What other writing projects do you have in the works?
My fourth children’s book will be published and in stores by years end. I don’t want to spoil the
surprise, but this story too is set in the Florida Keys.
I also have an adult novel in the works. Very different, very fun genre.
*Review*
Sammy & Scarlett’s Coral Reef Adventure was a surprisingly pleasant read!
I loved all of the facts the author included in the story. From the beginning, we’re learning about these two different types of fish, where they came from and where they are going, plus the journey to get there.
The author added in facts about coral reefs and other sea creatures that live there. I absolutely loved that he did not shy away from the predators, nor did he make sea turtles innocent; there is actually a page where Howie (a hawksbill sea turtle) eats jelly fish.
There is also mention of humans effect on the coral reefs/ocean life.
Sammy & Scarlett’s Coral Reef Adventure is a great book for introducing sea life and oceanic lessons, and a great way to get children talking about conservation.
I did find the book to be a bit long for younger children. My youngest sort of lost interest half way through, as there were more words than pictures.
The illustrations are stunning. They have the feel of fresh water color paints, which works super well with a book about sea creatures! I love the different types of coral and animals included on each page.
Overall, Sammy and Scarlett’s Coral Reef Adventure is a really good children’s book with a fun filled fishy adventure, with the added bonus of an important message about protecting the ocean and it’s inhabitants.
I rated Sammy & Scarlett’s Coral Reef Adventure four stars.
