The mother of invention starts with creative imagination

By Sari Karplus

When we were kids, the term “makerspace” hadn’t even been coined yet. But these days, every school and library has some form of STEM or STEAM learning as part of its activities. This type of learning is so important in the modern world of rapidly evolving technology and innovation. I imagine all the famous scientists would have loved to have such a creative playground like a makerspace as a youngster. Can you imagine an 8-year-old Einstein, creating and illuminating a picture that lights up using a battery?

STEM learning can look like a lot of things, but at its very core, it involves creativity and problem-solving. An invention is simply coming up with something amazing that didn’t exist before. Anybody can be an inventor with the right mindset!

The book Squirrels in Antarctica teaches readers a game that flexes that very muscle. The goal of the game within the book is to come up with an animal and a place that don’t actually go together. What you get is something delightfully absurd and new– like a blobfish teaching English in Spain or a skiing seal in Switzerland. The number of combos are endless! And the best part is, the book doesn’t make it seem like there’s learning happening, it’s just fun and funny!

Like hiding sweet potatoes in a brownie recipe, Squirrels in Antarctica hides the tools for STEM learning in a fun and entertaining game.

What animal/place combo will you invent?
